Top 13 Country–Capital Pairs Tested
World capitals are the most-tested geography category in standardized tests, trivia nights, and pub quizzes. The trickiest ones are countries where the largest city is NOT the capital — Australia (Canberra, not Sydney), Brazil (Brasília, not Rio or São Paulo), Switzerland (Bern, not Zurich), and the United States (Washington D.C., not New York).

How World Capitals Are Decided
A capital city is the seat of a country’s government — but it does not have to be the largest city, the wealthiest city, or even a particularly famous one. Most national capitals are picked for one of three reasons: they were the original royal seat, they were chosen as a political compromise, or they were built from scratch to consolidate power.
The ‘compromise capital’ is the most common pattern outside Europe. Canada’s capital is Ottawa, sitting on the border between English-speaking Ontario and French-speaking Quebec, picked in 1857 by Queen Victoria specifically because it offended neither group. The United States chose Washington D.C. on the Potomac River in 1790 to balance Northern and Southern states. Australia’s Canberra was selected in 1908 as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne.
The ‘planned capital’ is a more recent invention. Brazil’s Brasília was built from nothing on a high plain in central Brazil in the 1950s, designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer to push national development inland and away from the coast. Pakistan moved its capital from Karachi to a brand-new city, Islamabad, in 1960. Myanmar moved from Yangon (Rangoon) to the planned capital Naypyidaw in 2005 — citizens were given two days’ notice.
Multi-capital countries complicate the picture further. South Africa has three capitals: Pretoria (executive), Cape Town (legislative), and Bloemfontein (judicial). Bolivia has Sucre (constitutional) and La Paz (seat of government). The Netherlands has Amsterdam (constitutional) but holds its government in The Hague. When a quiz asks ‘what is the capital,’ the conventional answer is usually the executive seat — Pretoria, Sucre, Amsterdam — but be prepared for both forms in different question banks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the capital of Australia?
Canberra. Sydney is much larger and more famous, but it has never been the capital. Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne, completed in 1913.
Why isn't Rio de Janeiro the capital of Brazil?
Rio was the capital from 1763 to 1960, then Brazil moved to Brasília — a planned city in the country’s interior, designed to encourage inland development. Rio remains the second-largest city but no longer hosts the federal government.
Does South Africa really have three capitals?
Yes. Pretoria is the executive capital (where the president works), Cape Town is the legislative capital (parliament), and Bloemfontein is the judicial capital (Supreme Court of Appeal).
What was Astana renamed?
Astana was officially renamed Nur-Sultan in 2019 to honor Kazakhstan’s first president, then renamed back to Astana in 2022. We use the current name.
Which capital is the highest above sea level?
La Paz, Bolivia, sits at 3,640 m (11,942 ft) — the highest seat of government of any country. Sucre, Bolivia’s constitutional capital, is at 2,810 m.
Note: Capital city names per official UN listings as of 2024. Three-capital countries (South Africa) and split-capital countries (Bolivia, Netherlands) use the most-cited reference.
