Why Wi-Fi Calling Apps Disconnect on Suspend with Windows 11

Quick fix: Wi-Fi sleeps on PC sleep, disconnects apps (Teams, Discord, Slack). Allow network to wake / stay alive: Device Manager → Network adapters → Wi-Fi adapter → Properties → Power Management → untick “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” Also: Power Options → Advanced → Wireless adapter settings → Maximum performance. For chronic: disable Modern Standby.

Wi-Fi calling apps lose connection when PC sleeps. Cause: Wi-Fi adapter powering off, network drops apps. Solution: keep adapter alive during sleep, or accept reconnect after wake.

Symptom: Wi-Fi calling apps disconnect on suspend with Windows 11.
Affects: Windows 11 laptops.
Fix time: ~15 minutes.

What causes this

Apps that use persistent connections (WebSocket, long polling): Discord voice, Teams video, Slack, Zoom. On sleep: Wi-Fi powers off, app server detects timeout, disconnects.

Method 1: Disable Wi-Fi power management

The standard route.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Right-click Wi-Fi adapter → Properties.
  4. Switch to Power Management tab.
  5. Untick Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  6. Apply.
  7. Open Power Options. Pick active plan → Change advanced power settings.
  8. Find Wireless Adapter Settings → Power Saving Mode.
  9. Set both Plugged in and On battery to Maximum Performance.
  10. For chronic: stay plugged in for important calls.

This is the standard fix.

Method 2: Adjust sleep timer

For preventing sleep during calls.

  1. Settings → System → Power & battery → Screen and sleep.
  2. Set When plugged in, put my device to sleep after: Never (or longer).
  3. For battery: shorter to save power, but disconnects.
  4. For during calls: temporarily use PowerToys Awake module to prevent sleep.
  5. PowerToys → Awake → Keep awake indefinitely.
  6. After call: re-enable normal sleep.
  7. For chronic: many calls. Don’t enable sleep on plugged-in PC.
  8. For laptop on battery: accept disconnects or keep plugged.

This is the sleep prevention.

Method 3: Use cellular / wired backup

For chronic.

  1. For laptops with cellular: Cellular stays alive during sleep (depending on power state).
  2. For wired Ethernet: more stable. Less affected by power management.
  3. For chronic Wi-Fi disconnects: use USB-C dock with Ethernet, keep plugged.
  4. For specific apps with offline modes: Discord has reconnect logic. Slack catches up after sleep.
  5. For Teams: status changes to “Away” on sleep, then reconnects.
  6. For VoIP / SIP: phone-app on phone may be more reliable than laptop.
  7. For server connections (SSH, RDP): Windows Mobsync or Bitvise SSH client keepalive may help.

This is the alternative.

How to verify the fix worked

  • Wi-Fi adapter stays connected during short sleep periods.
  • Apps reconnect quickly after wake.
  • Power Management tab shows correct settings.
  • Event Viewer: fewer network disconnect events.

If none of these work

If disconnects persist: Specific adapter chip: Intel AX vs Realtek. Drivers vary. Update from manufacturer. For chronic: Modern Standby (S0) may be the issue. Some laptops can switch to S3 sleep in BIOS. For S0 sleep: Wi-Fi may stay connected but apps still time out. For specific app: each app has own reconnect logic. Configure if available. For corporate VPN: VPN drops on sleep. Reconnect on wake. For chronic chronic: dedicated mobile / cellular hotspot or phone for calls instead of laptop.

Bottom line: Device Manager → Wi-Fi adapter → Power Management → untick “Allow computer to turn off this device.” Power Options → Wireless Adapter → Maximum Performance. Use PowerToys Awake during important calls.
