How to Use Multiple Edge Profiles for Work and Personal Separation

Quick fix: Open Edge. Click your profile icon (top right). Click + Add profile. Pick “Add a personal profile” or “Add work profile.” Sign in with the work or personal Microsoft account. Each profile has its own bookmarks, history, passwords, extensions. Switch via the profile icon. Pin separate profiles to taskbar for one-click access.

One PC, two accounts — work and personal. Mixing them in one Edge profile means: work bookmarks in personal, sign-in conflicts, history mixing. Solution: separate Edge profiles. Microsoft built this for exactly this scenario.

Symptom: Want to keep work and personal browsing separate in Microsoft Edge on Windows 11.
Affects: Microsoft Edge on Windows 11.
Fix time: ~5 minutes.

What causes this need

Personal browsing data shouldn’t mix with work account data. Risks:

  • Auto-fill putting work email in personal forms.
  • Work IT seeing personal browsing via managed sync.
  • Compliance issues for corporate accounts.
  • Confused sign-in (signing into Microsoft 365 with wrong account).

Multiple profiles isolate each environment fully.

Method 1: Create separate work and personal profiles

The standard route.

  1. Open Edge.
  2. Click your profile icon at the top right.
  3. Click + Add profile.
  4. Pick: Add a personal profile or Add work profile. The work option is detected if a work account is signed into Windows.
  5. Sign in with the appropriate Microsoft account: work@company.com or personal@outlook.com.
  6. Walk through the setup. Edge syncs bookmarks, history, passwords for this account.
  7. Repeat for the other account if needed.
  8. To switch profiles: click profile icon → pick the other profile. A new Edge window opens with that profile.
  9. To pin profile to taskbar: open Edge in the profile → right-click taskbar icon → Pin to taskbar. Now you have one-click access for each.

This is the standard setup.

Method 2: Configure auto-redirection for site sign-ins

For ensuring sites open in the right profile.

  1. Edge can detect which site needs work vs personal account — useful for Microsoft 365 sites.
  2. In the work profile: Settings → Profiles → Profile preferences.
  3. Find Automatic profile switching. Enable.
  4. For corporate domains (e.g., your company’s Microsoft 365 tenant): Edge auto-switches to the work profile when you click a link to company resources.
  5. Or set per-site assignments in Profile preferences → Set profile preference for sites.
  6. For deep linking: clicking a Microsoft 365 link from Outlook opens in work profile automatically.
  7. For organizations using Entra ID (Azure AD): work profile syncs with the corporate identity automatically.
  8. For users with multiple work tenants: each tenant gets its own work profile.

This automates profile selection.

Method 3: Use Edge Workspaces for shared project tabs

For project-based separation beyond personal/work.

  1. Edge has Workspaces — shared tab groups across devices.
  2. Settings → Profiles. Or: pin the Workspaces icon in taskbar.
  3. Click Create new workspace. Name it (e.g., “Project Acme,” “Q1 Report”).
  4. Within a workspace: open multiple tabs related to that project. They sync across your devices signed into the same Edge profile.
  5. Share workspace: click Share → pick people from work tenant.
  6. For privacy: workspaces are tied to one Edge profile. Personal profile can’t see work-profile workspaces.
  7. For tab organization beyond profiles: use Edge’s vertical tabs + tab groups feature.
  8. For non-Edge users: Chromium-based browsers have similar features. Profiles in Chrome, vertical tabs in Vivaldi.

This is for project workflows.

How to verify the fix worked

  • Profile icon shows two profile circles.
  • Each profile has its own bookmarks bar.
  • Sign-in state different in each.
  • Edge taskbar icons (if pinned) show profile avatars.

If none of these work

If profile sign-in fails: MFA / conditional access: corporate accounts may need extra auth. Allow the prompt. For Entra ID join: Windows-joined PC may auto-assign work profile. Allow. For sync issues: Settings → Profiles → pick profile → Sync → Restart sync. For too many profiles: Edge allows up to 6 profiles per browser. For removing a profile: Settings → Profiles → pick profile → Remove. For migrating data between profiles: export bookmarks/passwords from one, import to the other. For chronic profile switching errors: clear Edge’s sync data: microsoft.com/account/privacy/edge → clear sync data. Then re-sync.

Bottom line: Click profile icon → Add profile → pick work or personal. Sign in with appropriate Microsoft account. Pin each profile to taskbar for one-click access. Use Automatic profile switching for site-based routing.
