Use Google Meet Adaptive Audio with Eligible Nearby Laptops

Adaptive audio allows eligible Google Meet users to share audio across multiple laptops in the same physical space without dedicated conference hardware. Meet combines their microphones and speakers to reduce feedback. Check subscription eligibility and the actual merged-audio indication before treating nearby laptops as one coordinated audio group.

Join with the eligible nearby computers

Google’s instructions begin with two or more computers in the same space joining the meeting. The feature requires an eligible Workspace subscription and cannot be used with Meet hardware devices. When Meet detects nearby laptops, it may merge audio automatically or ask you to confirm. Review the popup and use the offered Merge mic & speakers or sharing confirmation when appropriate.

Verify that audio really merged

Look for the adaptive-audio microphone indication and the grouping of merged participants. Google describes a message explaining that audio was merged with nearby devices to avoid feedback. Ask a remote colleague to check a short exchange. Simply placing laptops next to each other does not confirm the feature is active, especially when account eligibility or device detection differs.

Handle a failed group without adding feedback

If detection fails, check that computer speakers and physical microphone switches are not fully muted. Follow approved device guidance for audio-processing conflicts. If poor audio persists, Google’s guidance suggests leaving and rejoining, then using one computer if the problem recurs. Coordinate that fallback with everyone in the room. Turning off adaptive audio while several laptops remain active can cause echo or howling. Inspect which devices will still handle room audio before stopping the merge, and avoid assuming your personal mute button silences all microphones in the shared space.
