How to Set Up Threads Login Alerts for New Device Sign-Ins

2026年5月8日 by wisechecker

Threads does not include a built-in option to send you an email or push notification when someone signs into your account from a new device. This can leave you unaware of unauthorized access until you notice suspicious activity in your profile. The security feature that controls login alerts is managed through your linked Instagram account because Threads uses Instagram for authentication. This article explains how to enable login alerts on Instagram so that you receive notifications for new device sign-ins on Threads as well.

Key Takeaways: Enabling Threads Login Alerts via Instagram Security Settings

  • Instagram Settings > Security > Login alerts: Turn on email and push notifications for unrecognized logins to your Instagram account, which also covers Threads.
  • Instagram Settings > Security > Login activity: Review a list of all devices and locations where your Instagram and Threads accounts are currently signed in.
  • Instagram Settings > Security > Two-factor authentication: Add an extra layer of protection that requires a code from an authenticator app or SMS when logging in from an unrecognized device.

How Threads Login Alerts Work Through Instagram

Threads does not have its own login alert system because every Threads account is created and managed through an Instagram account. When you sign into Threads, you are authenticating using your Instagram credentials. Instagram’s security infrastructure is the gatekeeper for both platforms.

Instagram monitors login attempts for suspicious activity such as a sign-in from an unfamiliar device, a new location, or an unusual time. When Instagram detects an unrecognized login, it can send an alert to the email address or phone number associated with your Instagram account. Because Threads shares the same authentication system, any login alert that Instagram generates also covers a new device sign-in to Threads.

To receive these alerts, you must enable the Login alerts feature inside your Instagram security settings. The feature is turned off by default. You can also review your login history in the same section to see which devices and locations are currently authorized for your Instagram and Threads accounts.

Steps to Enable Login Alerts on Instagram for Threads Protection

Follow these steps on your iPhone or Android device. The menu paths are identical on both operating systems.

  1. Open the Instagram app and go to your profile
Tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner. This opens your Instagram profile page.
  2. Open the Settings menu
Tap the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner, then tap Settings and privacy.
  3. Navigate to Security settings
Scroll down and tap Security. This section contains all account protection options.
  4. Open Login alerts
Tap Login alerts. You will see a screen with two toggle switches.
  5. Enable email alerts
Tap the toggle next to Email so it turns blue. Instagram will send an alert to the email address on your account whenever a login is detected from an unrecognized device or browser.
  6. Enable push notifications (optional)
Tap the toggle next to Push notifications so it turns blue. Instagram will send a push notification to your phone for unrecognized logins. This is faster than email but requires the Instagram app to have notification permission on your device.
  7. Verify your email address if prompted
If you have not verified your email address, Instagram will ask you to confirm it. Check your email inbox for a verification link from Instagram and tap it.
  8. Review your login activity
Go back to the Security menu and tap Login activity. Here you can see a list of all devices, locations, and times where your Instagram account (and therefore your Threads account) is currently signed in. Tap any entry to see details and remove devices you do not recognize.

What to Do When You Receive a Login Alert

When Instagram sends you a login alert, it will include the device type, approximate location, and time of the sign-in attempt. If you recognize the login, you can ignore the alert. If you do not recognize the login, take these actions immediately.

Secure Your Account After an Unrecognized Login Alert

Open the Instagram app and go to Settings > Security > Login activity. Look for the session that triggered the alert. Tap the three dots next to that session and select Log out. This removes the unauthorized device from your account.

Next, change your Instagram password immediately. Go to Settings > Security > Password and enter a strong new password that you have not used on any other account. Because Threads uses Instagram authentication, changing your Instagram password will also invalidate the password used for Threads.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication for Extra Protection

Two-factor authentication adds a second verification step when someone tries to log in from an unrecognized device. Go to Settings > Security > Two-factor authentication. Choose either Authenticator app or SMS. An authenticator app like Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator is more secure because it does not rely on your phone carrier. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the setup. After enabling this, any new device sign-in to Threads will require both your password and a time-based code.

Common Issues with Threads Login Alerts

Login Alerts Are Not Sending to My Email

The most common cause is an unverified email address on your Instagram account. Open Instagram and go to Settings > Account > Personal information. Tap Email and confirm that the address shown is correct and that you have received and clicked the verification link from Instagram. If you still do not receive alerts, check your spam or junk folder and add Instagram’s email domain to your safe senders list.

I Receive Alerts for My Own Logins

Instagram may flag a login as unrecognized if you sign in from a new device, a different city, or after clearing your browser cookies. This is normal behavior and does not indicate a security issue. If you want to stop receiving alerts for your own logins, you can mark the device as trusted by tapping This was me in the alert email or push notification. Instagram will remember the device and stop sending alerts for future logins from that device.

Login Alerts Are Enabled but I Still Do Not Receive Them

Push notifications require that the Instagram app has notification permission on your device. On an iPhone, go to Settings > Instagram > Notifications and make sure Allow Notifications is turned on. On Android, go to Settings > Apps > Instagram > Notifications and enable all categories. For email alerts, verify that your email provider is not blocking Instagram’s messages. You can test the alert system by signing out of your Instagram account on one device and signing back in. An alert should arrive within a few minutes.

You can now receive login alerts for new device sign-ins to Threads by enabling the feature in your Instagram security settings. Review your login activity weekly to spot any unauthorized access early. For the strongest protection, combine login alerts with two-factor authentication using an authenticator app.
