Manual video playback in Google Slides lets you decide when a particular embedded player should start. It is useful when a slide contains discussion material before a clip or when several optional clips are available. It differs from the current on-click setting that starts video when the presentation advances.
Select manual playback
On a computer, select the video in the editor and open Format options > Video playback. Choose Play (manual). Google’s guidance describes this mode as playing when you click specifically on the video embedded in the slide.
Plan the delivery interaction
Check that the player is large enough to identify and reach during the talk. If you use a remote clicker that only advances slides, rehearse how you will start the manual player rather than assuming the clicker performs a direct player click.
Keep the slide’s instructions clear when another presenter will deliver it. A short speaker note can explain which clip is optional and when it should be played, without placing internal instructions in the audience text.
Verify the full experience
Run the slideshow and click the intended player. Confirm the clip, sound, and return to the slide’s discussion. Check what normal advance controls do before and after playback so you do not skip material accidentally. Test through the actual presenter’s account and browser. Manual mode controls the start action; it does not remove source permissions, bypass network restrictions, or make an unavailable video playable. Resolve those separate conditions before relying on the clip in a live session.
