How Cave Length Is Measured
Cave length includes all mapped passageways, regardless of size. Some ‘caves’ are vast networks; others are single chambers. Mammoth Cave is a network of interconnected limestone passages explored continuously since 1798.
Mexico’s Sistema Sac Actun is the longest underwater cave system, mostly cenotes connected through Yucatan limestone. Sistema Ox Bel Ha is similar.
Krubera and Veryovkina (both in Abkhazia, Georgia) compete for deepest cave at 2,212m and 2,212m respectively. Different from longest, which favors networks.
