Gmail’s spelling suggestions, grammar suggestions, and autocorrect are separate controls in the computer interface. You can review them without turning off every writing feature or changing the language of the whole Google Account.
Change the standard Gmail preferences
- Open Gmail on a computer and confirm the selected account.
- Select Settings → See all settings.
- Open General.
- Find Grammar suggestions, Spelling suggestions, and Autocorrect.
- Choose the on or off state for each available control and save changes where required.
Set each option according to your goal. You might want suggestions without automatic changes, for example. Feature and language availability can vary; do not assume every account will show an identical set of controls.
Review corrections before accepting them
Gmail can underline a word or phrase it considers incorrect. Select the suggestion to inspect it, then accept or ignore it as appropriate. For an unwanted automatic correction, Google’s guide describes using the platform’s Undo command while the edit is still available.
Check names, identifiers, quotations, and specialist vocabulary carefully. A suggestion is a language aid, not evidence that the resulting statement is factually correct or that the intended meaning was preserved.
Keep other writing systems separate
Smart Compose predicts text, while Gemini proofreading is a separate feature with its own eligibility. Turning off standard spelling suggestions does not necessarily turn off those tools.
Your browser, operating system, mobile keyboard, or an extension can also mark words. If underlines remain after a Gmail preference change, identify that checker instead of repeatedly toggling unrelated settings. Chrome’s own spell-check controls are under its language settings.
Verify the outcome safely
Use a short non-sensitive draft and inspect which suggestions appear and whether words change automatically. Do not send a test to a real group or use a confidential message to compare online tools. On a phone or in another mail client, consult that application’s controls; Gmail’s computer preferences do not promise identical behavior in every editor. Keep the final human review of wording, recipients, and attachments even when automatic language checks are enabled.
