Muting a Gmail conversation keeps ordinary replies to that thread out of your inbox by archiving them. It does not block the sender or unsubscribe you from a mailing list. You can still find the conversation and reverse the mute.
Mute and locate a conversation
- In Gmail on a computer, select the conversation.
- Open More in the toolbar and choose Mute.
- To find it later, search
is:muted, optionally adding a sender or subject.
Read enough of the thread to ensure it is the one you intend to quiet. If several unrelated notifications have been grouped together, muting that conversation may affect more than the single visible subject suggests.
Understand the inbox exceptions
Google documents exceptions where a muted conversation can still produce inbox mail: a message sent only to you, a message sent to a Google Group you belong to, or a message where someone adds you to To or Cc. A returned message therefore does not automatically mean that muting failed.
Compare the recipient details of the new message with the previous replies. Muting is designed for thread management; it is not a universal rule preventing every future message from a person from reaching you.
Unmute when you need the discussion again
Find the muted conversation, select it, and choose More, then Unmute. Check its location afterward. If you also need an archived conversation in the inbox immediately, use Move to Inbox as appropriate.
For commercial mail you previously requested, an unsubscribe control may be more suitable. For harassment or deception, consider blocking, spam reporting, or phishing reporting based on the actual behavior. Do not use muting to hide a security alert you still need to investigate.
Archive alone has different behavior: a reply to an archived exchange normally returns it to the inbox. Choose mute when you want to reduce routine conversation traffic while retaining access to its history, and record important actions elsewhere before quieting an active work discussion.
