A spreadsheet can open without granting permission to edit it. Identify whether the whole file is view-only, particular cells are protected, or you are looking at an Office-format file through a different viewing mode.
Check your identity and file role
Confirm the selected Google Account and the file’s sharing information. Viewer, commenter, and editor roles are different. If you need to change the file, request the appropriate role from the owner through the supported sharing process.
A link forwarded to you does not necessarily grant access. Work and school policies can also restrict sharing outside an organization. Do not ask the owner to enable unrestricted public access merely to make editing convenient.
Distinguish file access from protected ranges
If you can edit some cells but not others, inspect protected sheets or ranges with an authorized editor. A protection rule can restrict only a formula area or display a warning. That is different from having no file-editing role.
Protection is not a confidentiality boundary. A user able to view a spreadsheet may still see protected data. Do not put secret information in a visible tab and assume an edit restriction conceals it.
Check format and legitimate alternatives
An Excel file can be edited in its original format or converted into a separate Google Sheets file, depending on the workflow. Conversion is not a method for acquiring permissions you do not have. Confirm which file and mode you are actually opening.
If making a personal working copy is allowed, name it clearly and review its sharing. It will not automatically replace the team’s original or preserve its complete history. Keep changes out of the authoritative file until the owner agrees on the intended collaboration process. Record the exact role or protected-cell error for support instead of repeatedly pasting into a blocked range.
