If Google Sheets cannot save changes, preserve the work still visible on the original device before refreshing or closing it. A saved-state warning concerns synchronization; it does not automatically mean the cloud file has been deleted.
Record the message and protect recent edits
Check the document status near the title and the exact warning. Google’s guide for the message about copying recent edits before reverting explains that a slow or disrupted save can trigger it.
Copy the recent unsaved changes into an approved safe location while retaining enough context to restore the correct cells. Avoid placing confidential spreadsheet content in a personal note service or support chat. Keep the original tab and device available until you understand what has reached the server.
Check connection, account, and file scope
Confirm the network connection and that you are editing the intended file in the authorized account. Compare another file only after preserving work. A large paste, image operation, or workbook limit can be a different cause from a general connection failure.
If offline access was properly configured, local edits can synchronize after connectivity returns. A new browser session does not necessarily contain those local changes, so an older cloud view is not enough to decide they are lost.
Reconcile before reapplying changes
Once the connection is stable, follow the relevant recovery instructions and inspect the saved file. Compare the intended recent edits with what actually appears before pasting them again. Otherwise a partially saved operation can be duplicated.
Verify the document’s saved state and a few important cells. Do not clear site data, remove the browser profile, or close the only local copy as a first test. If the warning returns, record the operation and approximate data size, with sensitive values concealed, and investigate the specific save failure.
