A familiar device does not guarantee that Google will skip every identity check. Google can require verification for sensitive actions even while you are already signed in.
Identify the action being protected
Google lists actions such as changing a password, viewing saved passwords, downloading data, and changing sensitive Gmail settings as situations that may require additional proof. A prompt during one of these actions is different from losing access to the whole account.
Check whether ordinary Gmail access still works. Do not assume that an action-specific restriction means the account has been deleted or permanently locked.
Use an available trusted method
Follow the methods shown in the legitimate Google flow. If a prompt does not arrive, confirm that the relevant device is connected and signed in to the correct account. Use Try another way or the alternative-method control when offered.
Approve only a request you initiated. An unsolicited prompt should not be accepted simply to make it disappear.
Consider recent security changes
A recently added device, phone, passkey, or security key may not yet satisfy the trust requirements for some sensitive actions. Google’s guidance describes seven-day restrictions in certain sensitive-action cases. This is not a universal seven-day countdown for every login error.
Recovery-information changes have their own transition behavior, including possible use of previous information for seven days. Read the actual message before deciding that a setting failed to save.
Keep the environment stable
Use the device and browser you normally use, and avoid repeatedly clearing cookies or replacing authentication methods while diagnosing the challenge. Doing so can remove familiar context without resolving the original issue.
For a work or school account, the organization may require verification using a corporate device. Ask the administrator rather than trying to imitate a personal-account procedure.
If you cannot sign in at all
Use Google’s account-recovery process instead of an action-specific workaround. A recovery security hold can last hours or days depending on the case; the recovery screen’s instructions take precedence over a generic waiting estimate. Do not turn off 2-Step Verification or pay a stranger to bypass the challenge.
