Google Advanced Protection is intended for accounts at elevated risk of targeted attacks. It combines stronger sign-in requirements with restrictions on app access, additional download protections, and more demanding recovery checks.
Decide whether the restrictions fit your needs
Google names groups such as journalists, activists, campaign staff, business leaders, and IT administrators among people who may benefit. The decision should also consider the sensitive information in the account and the apps you rely on.
The program is available at no charge, according to Google’s FAQ. Compatible hardware keys may cost money if you choose that route; passkey availability and account eligibility should be checked separately.
Expect passkey or key-based sign-in
Google’s current guidance requires a passkey or security key for sign-in. Prepare a suitable backup and keep recovery email and phone information current before enrollment.
Do not rely on an ordinary SMS workflow or assume every backup option from standard 2-Step Verification remains available. Recovery takes extra steps if you lose the required methods.
Review connected apps first
Advanced Protection limits which apps can access sensitive Google data. An app you currently use for Gmail or Drive may stop working if its access is not supported.
Google’s FAQ says app passwords are not supported and existing app passwords are revoked when you enroll. Check critical integrations and the provider’s supported authentication options before making the change.
Understand device effects
Google describes additional checks for harmful downloads and Android protections, including limits on installing from most outside sources. These are protective restrictions, not bugs to work around by weakening the device.
For a work or school identity, ask whether the administrator permits enrollment and what organizational requirements apply.
Prepare, enroll, and verify
Use Google’s official enrollment instructions, confirm the account, and test the permitted sign-in and essential apps while preserving an independent backup.
Advanced Protection reduces certain risks; it does not make account activity irrelevant or guarantee that every device and linked service is safe. Continue checking unfamiliar events and protecting the devices or credential accounts that hold your passkeys.
