An SMTP connection timeout usually requires checking whether the client can reach the intended sending service. It is not the same as an explicit invalid-password response. Identify the host, port, encryption mode, and network policy before repeatedly changing credentials.
Verify the intended server and connection mode
Use the mail provider’s current settings for the actual account. Google’s authenticated Gmail SMTP guidance includes smtp.gmail.com with secure configurations such as port 465 for SSL/TLS or 587 for the documented TLS setup. These are not interchangeable with another provider’s server or a Workspace relay configuration.
Check for a typing error and a mismatch between the selected port and encryption mode. A connection that never reaches the authentication stage cannot be diagnosed simply by replacing an app password.
Compare the client and network safely
- Confirm that the device has a functioning connection.
- Check whether Gmail on the web works for the same account.
- Try a trusted alternative network only if organizational policy permits.
- Ask network support whether the required SMTP traffic is restricted.
A working web inbox does not prove that the network permits the client’s SMTP connection. Conversely, a client-specific failure does not establish that Gmail is down for everyone.
Escalate with diagnostic details
Record the client version, server hostname, port, security mode, time, and exact error without exposing passwords. Administrators can inspect a firewall, proxy, or provider restriction more effectively with that information.
Do not disable the firewall, certificate validation, or encryption to make the connection succeed. Avoid unknown SMTP relays and do not use a personal hotspot to evade an employer’s restrictions.
If the service later returns an authentication error instead of a timeout, follow the supported sign-in checks as a separate next step. Preserve local Outbox and drafts before changing the account setup. After a legitimate repair, send one harmless test and confirm both submission and receipt rather than assuming a successful connection proves end-to-end delivery.
