Gmail Signature Links Open the Wrong Website or Email Address: Check the Targets

2026年10月28日 by wisechecker

If clicking a Gmail signature opens the wrong site or starts a message to the wrong address, audit the link target rather than judging its visible label. Correctly displayed contact text can still contain an outdated destination.

Inspect the saved signature’s targets

Open computer Gmail’s full settings and select the relevant signature under General. Check each website and email link using the editor’s link control. Compare the destination with the approved address from a trusted source.

Look for a changed business domain, an old personal address, a spelling mistake, or a link copied from another signature. For an email link, verify the address that a test click places into a new message’s To field; the displayed name alone is insufficient.

Check every signature that could be used

Review the variants used for new messages, replies, and authorized Send mail as addresses. If the incorrect link appears only occasionally, an alternate signature or a saved template may still contain the old footer.

An image in a signature can also act as a link. Its picture may be current while its click destination is outdated. Keep essential contact details as text, and do not replace an image merely because the associated hyperlink needs correction.

Verify safely before using the new footer

Save changes and create a fresh message. Send a harmless test to yourself and inspect the received footer. Check the displayed destination before opening a website; for an email link, open a draft and verify its recipient without sending it.

Do not insert a private file’s sharing URL, an account-recovery link, or a URL containing access tokens into a widely reused signature. If the destination redirects, confirm the final organization and page through a trusted route.

If the saved editor is correct but the received message’s links are rewritten, ask the organization’s mail or security administrator whether an approved protection service changes links in transit. Preserve that protection and report the specific mismatch. Do not turn off security scanning merely to make the displayed URL resemble the editor.
