Two Gmail signatures in the same outgoing message can come from two different sources: an automatic footer plus text already inside the draft. Extra blank lines can likewise belong to the saved signature, a template, or the quoted conversation. Identify the source before deleting your signature library.
Start with a fresh, empty message
Open a new compose window without inserting a template or pasting text. Count the signatures that appear. If there is one, add your usual prepared content and inspect the result again. This comparison can show whether the second footer arrives with the content rather than with Gmail’s default insertion.
For a reply, expand the quoted material and distinguish your current closing from a previous sender’s footer. A signature repeated inside quoted history is different from two signatures added to your new response.
Check saved templates and manual closings
A template may contain a footer saved as part of its text. Insert it into a test draft, remove any unnecessary closing, and deliberately overwrite only the intended template. Keep a copy of the approved wording first; Google says deleted templates cannot be recovered.
If an organization’s signature service or another mail application is involved, ask its administrator which layer adds the footer. A single copy in Gmail’s draft does not prove that another mail-processing system will not add content later. Do not disable a centrally required disclaimer without authorization.
Clean up spacing at its actual source
In Gmail’s Signature editor, inspect leading and trailing empty paragraphs. Simplify copied formatting on a saved copy if necessary, then save changes and test again. Keep an intentional separation between the message and its footer; remove only the surplus lines you have identified.
Compare the received test on desktop and mobile. Font metrics and paragraph rendering can differ between clients, so a fixed arrangement made with many blank lines is fragile. The goal is one correct closing and readable spacing, not an identical pixel measurement in every email app.
