If focus seems to jump around Gmail while you use a screen reader, check whether Gmail and the reader are using different navigation models. Application commands, virtual-cursor movement, and ordinary browser focus can point to different places.
Identify the current navigation mode
Listen for whether you are in the conversation list, a compose field, the toolbar, or another region. Then check the reader’s browse, focus, or application mode using its documented controls.
Google recommends a web-application workflow for Gmail and provides separate guidance for some JAWS or NVDA users who prefer webpage-style navigation. Mixing commands from those workflows can make a message seem unreachable or cause a letter to be handled by the reader instead of Gmail.
Return to a known region
Use Google’s documented focus or region-navigation commands to return to the message list or main window. Close only the dialog you actually opened, and confirm the announced location before acting. Preserve text before a reload if a compose window is involved.
Do not use Delete or Archive as a focus test. A row can have focus without being selected, while previously selected conversations can remain selected elsewhere. Confirm selection status independently of the row the reader is currently announcing.
Reproduce the focus change carefully
Record the last command, the announced location before and after it, and whether a dialog, settings save, or page reload occurred. Google’s transition guide notes that changes to screen-reader configuration can affect where navigation resumes.
Test in a supported, updated browser and compare optional Gmail-modifying extensions if the problem persists. Avoid resetting all accessibility settings at once, because that removes a useful working baseline. When reporting the issue, include the exact reader version, browser version, navigation mode, and a harmless example. Explain whether focus actually moved or the virtual cursor merely reported a different position; that distinction helps support reproduce the fault.
