Gmail Can Preview an Attachment but Cannot Open It in Your App: Check the Format

2026年10月28日 by wisechecker

If Gmail can preview an attachment but your own application cannot open it, separate Gmail’s viewer from the downloaded file and the local app. A working preview does not establish that every device supports the format or that a download completed correctly.

Confirm that you downloaded the actual file

Use the attachment’s Download control and inspect the browser’s downloads list. Check the filename, extension, size, and destination. Opening a saved webpage or a partial download is different from opening the original document.

Keep the original email and downloaded file unchanged while investigating. If the file is empty or the download reports an error, resolve that transfer problem before treating the local application as the cause.

Use an application that supports the format

Identify the actual file type and the application selected to open it. Chrome’s download guidance explains that opening a downloaded file uses the computer’s default application for that type. The default may not be the program you intended.

A document’s appearance in Gmail’s preview is not a promise of support in an older office suite, a phone’s viewer, or a specialist application. For video previews that fail, Google suggests downloading and using the device’s video player; that player must still support the file.

Do not change an extension just to force an unrelated program to accept the file. If a conversion is necessary, ask for an appropriate export from the sender or use an approved local conversion process on a copy.

Keep editing and sharing consequences clear

Google offers controls to open eligible Office attachments in Docs, Sheets, or Slides. Its guidance says a copy is stored in Drive. That is a separate workflow with its own storage and sharing implications, not simply proof that your existing local app has been repaired.

Verify important formatting, formulas, and page layout after using another application. Avoid uploading confidential material to an unknown online converter. If the file remains unusable, give the sender the exact format and error and request a tested compatible copy, without exposing private contents in a public support post.
