Focus time is a Google Calendar event type available to eligible work or school accounts. It can reserve a specific interval and optionally decline meetings or mute Chat notifications. These capabilities are different from simply naming an ordinary event Focus.
Check eligibility and view
Use Calendar on a computer and check Google’s current eligible-account list. The guidance includes specified Workspace business, enterprise, education, and nonprofit accounts. It also says focus time can be created only from Day and Week views.
Create the intended block
Click the desired time and choose Focus time at the top of the event. Enter a specific start and end time. Review Do not disturb and Automatically decline meetings rather than accepting defaults without considering existing commitments.
Google says muting Chat requires the organization to have Chat enabled and the focus block to be shorter than twenty-four hours. A Calendar focus block is therefore not a universal device-wide silence mode.
Verify the saved behavior
Save and reopen the event, identified by its headphones icon. Confirm timing, recurrence if used, and the selected decline scope. Google’s guidance says the default decline behavior includes new and existing meetings, with an option to limit it to new invitations. Check overlapping meetings before relying on the arrangement. Review the block’s visibility separately if its title or description is sensitive. The completed setup should reserve the intended working period with deliberate communication settings, without implying that every app’s notifications are muted or that everyone invited to another meeting has been informed by the existence of the block alone.
