After a supported Gmail address change, the previous address remains an alternate address on the same Google Account. Google’s current guidance says that you cannot remove or hide that previous Gmail address from the account merely because you now use a new primary one.
What remains attached to the account
Messages sent to either address reach the account, and the previous address can still identify it for sign-in. The old username is not released for another person to register. Deleting the Google Account is not a way to make that old Gmail username available again.
This matters if your aim is privacy. Renaming the account can change the address you use going forward, but does not make the prior address unrelated to you or erase copies already held by other people.
Removing a sending choice is different
You may see the old address in Gmail’s Send mail as settings. Removing that sending alias, where offered, affects the choices available when composing outgoing mail. It does not remove the address from the Google Account, stop incoming mail to it, or revoke its account association.
Likewise, changing a display name does not remove the old email address. Verify which setting you are editing before accepting a removal prompt.
If you want less mail at the old address
Update the contact address on important services and tell relevant correspondents which address to use. For mail management, start with a label or an archive rule that you can inspect. Automatically deleting everything addressed to the old account can hide password resets, receipts, or legitimate replies to earlier conversations.
A filter acts on messages; it does not retire the address or prevent senders from using it. Test any rule with non-sensitive mail before relying on it.
If you need a genuinely separate identity
A separate Google Account is a different project with separate data, purchases, sharing permissions, and recovery arrangements. It is not the same as renaming the current account. Do not delete the existing account before checking everything that depends on it. For a work or school address, ask the administrator about the organization’s alias and retention policies instead of applying personal Gmail assumptions.
