Understand Default Google Meet Encryption Without Promising Absolute Privacy

Google Meet meetings use cloud encryption by default. Google describes meeting media as encrypted in transit between devices and Google data centers, with recordings encrypted at rest in Drive. These protections matter, but they do not mean every ordinary meeting is end-to-end encrypted or that participants cannot retain what they receive.

Identify the communication type

Google distinguishes link-based scheduled or instant meetings from direct Meet calls and legacy calling. Some personal-account calling experiences offer additional end-to-end encryption. That calling option should not be used to describe the default protection of every meeting opened through a Meet link. Check the actual product experience and its encryption information before making a privacy claim.

Understand the additional CSE layer

Eligible organizations can configure client-side encryption, or CSE, with an external identity provider and key service. Google’s CSE guidance says participant media is encrypted with keys unavailable to Google’s servers. That requires administrator setup and changes which meeting features are available. It is a separate configuration, not a benefit automatically added by a private invitation or a familiar account.

Review who receives and can retain the content

Encryption does not decide whether the right people were invited, whether recording or note-taking is active, or whether an attendee can make an external copy. Check those meeting arrangements separately before discussing sensitive material. Google’s security guidance recommends caution with personal information and with admitting unknown participants. Use precise wording when explaining the meeting to colleagues: name the documented encryption mode and the remaining sharing decisions. Avoid promises of absolute privacy, guaranteed secrecy, or automatic deletion that the selected meeting controls do not establish.
