Missing Google Slides captions can result from browser support, microphone access, inactivity, or organization policy. Check those conditions before changing the presentation’s contents. A caption control that is enabled does not prove that speech is reaching the recognition service.
Check supported conditions
Use a current supported browser: Google’s caption guidance lists Chrome, Edge, and Safari. Confirm an internet connection and a working computer or paired external microphone. If the feature is unavailable in a work or school account, ask whether an administrator has disabled it.
Inspect the audio input
Check the relevant browser and system microphone settings. Confirm that the intended device is connected and that another application is not preventing its use. Reduce background noise and speak at a normal, clear volume. Use a short test sentence to distinguish missing input from inaccurate recognition.
Google notes that captions and the microphone turn off after 30 minutes without activity. Re-enable them when resuming a paused session instead of assuming the deck has lost its configuration.
Verify a targeted recovery
Restart the caption control and inspect the actual output in slideshow view. Test the audience display or meeting share as well. Keep the exact symptom if the problem persists and involve the responsible support team when policy or device management is involved. Avoid deleting account data or disabling protections as a routine first step. A successful recovery should produce visible, reasonably useful captions in the tested environment, while still acknowledging that machine-generated text can contain errors and is not a saved transcript.
