Google Sheets Formula Parse Error: Check Separators, Quotes, and Parentheses

A formula parse error means Sheets cannot interpret the expression’s syntax. It is different from a valid formula that finds no match or divides by zero.

Check punctuation and locale

Inspect matching parentheses, ordinary double quotation marks around text, and the equals sign at the beginning. Re-type suspicious punctuation copied from a formatted document rather than changing the whole expression at once.

Check the spreadsheet locale and the separators expected by the file. Examples using commas may need different argument separators in another locale. Array-literal row and column separators also have locale-specific conventions.

Reduce the formula to a working part

Test the innermost function in a helper cell with a small known input. Add outer functions one at a time. The function help box shows the expected arguments while you edit.

Check sheet names and text literals separately from function arguments. Punctuation inside a quoted string is data, so a blanket comma-to-semicolon replacement can damage an otherwise correct condition or regular expression.

Restore the intended expression

Once the formula parses, verify its result against a manually calculated example. Successful parsing does not prove the range, units, or business condition is correct. Include an empty input and an ordinary nonempty input in the check.

Do not hide the error by converting the whole cell to text or wrapping an unexamined expression in broad error handling. Keep the original formula for comparison, fix one syntax issue at a time, and record any locale adaptation needed by other editors who will reuse the example. This makes a later calculation failure distinguishable from a remaining syntax problem.
