How to Create a Google Sheets Table and Check Its Column Types

A Sheets table adds structure, column types, and table-level controls to a range. It is more than alternating row colors, but its type warnings do not replace a complete data-quality review.

Prepare a coherent range

Use one header row and consistent record columns. Select the intended range and choose Format > Convert to table. Inspect the result before converting a large operational dataset.

Give the table a meaningful name and make its column headers clear. Keep unrelated notes or subtotal blocks outside the record range. Check the table menu’s Adjust table range option if its boundaries are wrong.

Set appropriate column types

Use the column menu to choose types such as Text, Number, Date, Dropdown, or Checkbox. A Date type can warn about entries that do not match; it does not establish that every ambiguous date has the intended business meaning.

Choose Text for identifiers whose leading zeros matter. Use None only when mixed types are intentional. Inspect imported rows and placeholders so empty-looking input prompts are not mistaken for completed records.

Check formulas and maintenance actions

A formula can refer to a named column, for example =SUM(Orders[Amount]) for a table named Orders with an Amount column. Test the total and add a sample record to confirm the reference includes the intended data.

Table references are not supported in every feature’s range selector, including current chart, pivot-table, and conditional-formatting range selection. Review those consumers separately. In the table menu, reverting to unformatted data preserves data, while Delete table removes the table and its data. Select the operation that matches your goal rather than experimenting on the live table.
