Google Sheets Autofill Repeats a Value Instead of Extending a Series

Dragging a single cell often copies it. To extend an intentional numeric or date sequence, give Sheets enough examples to identify the pattern.

Provide a clear starting series

Enter at least two adjacent seed values, such as 1 and 2, or two consecutive actual dates. Select both cells. Drag the small blue square at the selection’s lower-right corner over the intended destination.

Google explains that a recognized date or number series continues, while values that do not form such a series repeat. A label containing digits is not automatically an instruction to increment every part of that label.

Distinguish series filling from formula copying

If the source contains a formula, inspect how relative references move when it is filled. A formula that should always use one fixed input may require an absolute reference; a record-by-record calculation normally needs relative row references.

Keep generated IDs separate from permanent business identifiers unless your process defines how uniqueness is maintained. Repeating or extending a pattern does not check whether the resulting values already exist elsewhere in the workbook.

Check the boundaries and exceptions

Review the first generated value, an intermediate one, and the final cell. Confirm the selection did not overwrite neighboring records. For date sequences, compare weekends and month boundaries with the schedule you actually need.

Autofill is not a holiday-aware scheduling policy simply because it extends dates. Likewise, a visually plausible sequence can still be wrong if one seed was stored as text. Inspect the underlying values and stop after a short test if the result repeats unexpectedly. Correct the seeds before filling hundreds of rows, then verify the final count against the intended range.
