Codes containing slashes or hyphens can resemble dates. If Sheets changes a product code while you enter it, prevent automatic interpretation before loading the rest of the column.
Prepare the destination first
Select the intended code column and choose Format > Number > Plain text. Enter a small sample containing the problematic punctuation and confirm the formula bar retains the intended characters.
For a one-off manual entry, a leading apostrophe can indicate text. For a repeatable import, use a consistent text-field workflow and verify how the import handles automatic conversion rather than asking every editor to remember a special keystroke.
Recover changed codes from the source
If an entry has already become a calendar date, switching the cell to Plain text afterward does not necessarily recover the exact original spelling. The original might have omitted a year or used punctuation that a date value no longer preserves.
Undo immediately when appropriate, or reload the affected identifiers from the authoritative source into a prepared text range. Do not reconstruct codes from the displayed date unless the source system explicitly defines that conversion.
Check the business meaning
Compare exact values and record counts before replacing the working column. Test examples that resemble dates, fractions, and numeric expressions. Confirm lookups and exports use the preserved code rather than an unintended date serial.
Keep real transaction dates in a separate date column. Changing the entire spreadsheet’s locale to accommodate product codes can create new ambiguity for genuine dates and amounts. A text representation is usually the appropriate boundary for identifiers; a file-wide locale change should follow the workbook’s regional requirements, not serve as a workaround for one code pattern.
