Google Sheets Treats Numbers as Text: Diagnose the Cell Before Converting It

A column can look numeric while some cells contain text. If a total omits imported amounts or comparisons behave unexpectedly, check the stored type before changing the whole column.

Test a representative cell

In an empty helper column, enter =ISNUMBER(A2). A numeric value returns TRUE; the text string “123” returns FALSE. Alignment and number formatting alone are not reliable tests because users can customize both.

Inspect the formula bar for a leading apostrophe, spaces, currency text, or an imported formula. Keep the original column available so that a failed conversion does not destroy the source evidence.

Convert amounts, not identifiers

For text that represents an actual amount, try =VALUE(A2) in a helper cell. VALUE understands supported number, date, and time strings, so review the interpretation as well as whether it returns a number. Decimal and grouping characters must agree with the intended source convention.

Do not apply this to customer IDs, postal codes, or reference numbers merely because they contain digits. Converting those fields can remove significant leading zeros. An error is a reason to investigate the input, not to replace it silently with zero.

Verify before replacing the source

Compare positive, negative, decimal, blank, and malformed examples. Confirm that the helper values produce the expected subtotal and retain the intended units. Formatting a text cell as Number does not necessarily repair its contents.

Only after checking the results should you replace the working numeric column, if replacement is necessary. Keep a recovery copy and reconcile row counts. For a recurring import, correct the interpretation at the import boundary so each refresh does not reintroduce the same mixed types.
