How to Import Passwords Into Google Password Manager and Handle Duplicate Entries

2026年11月4日 by wisechecker

Importing passwords requires a correctly formatted file and the intended destination account. Duplicate records deserve inspection before you choose an overwrite or keep-both option. A successful import count alone does not prove that the newest credential became the one you will use.

Prepare the CSV in a trusted location

Export from the existing manager through its supported process. Google’s account-import guidance requires CSV format with columns named url, username, and password. Renaming a file extension does not convert an unrelated format into a valid CSV.

Use a trusted local tool for necessary header corrections. Do not upload the file to an online spreadsheet or converter. Keep the source manager available until the migration is verified.

Import into the correct account

Open the intended Google Password Manager account and its Settings import control, then select the approved file. Check the current import limits and read the result, including skipped or failed entries.

Where Chrome reports conflicting entries, compare the website and username with the existing saved record. Decide deliberately which credential is current. Do not treat every duplicate as obsolete, since two accounts on the same website can legitimately use different usernames.

Verify records and finish the migration

Review a sample covering ordinary entries, conflicts, and any failed rows. Use legitimate service sign-in or an existing trusted record to establish which password is correct; avoid repeated guesses that could lock an account.

Retain only the records and migration evidence you are authorized to keep. After successful import, Google recommends deleting the plaintext CSV, including unnecessary transfer copies under your normal retention process. Do not retire the old manager until the required entries are available in the new one. Importing passwords does not automatically migrate every passkey or change the real passwords at those websites.
