Gmail and Google Chat Send Different Notifications: Control Them Separately

2026年11月4日 by wisechecker

An email alert and a Chat alert can come from different settings even when both appear while Gmail is open. Start by identifying what produced the notification: a new email, a direct message, a space mention, or an email reminder about unread Chat activity.

Adjust email alerts in the mailbox

On a computer, open Gmail’s Settings and See all settings. In General, inspect Desktop notifications. Choose the appropriate email notification behavior and save the change. Browser and operating-system notification permissions still apply; enabling a Gmail preference cannot override a blocked browser permission.

Make changes in the correct account. If your phone is also signed in, its Gmail notification settings and the operating system’s notification channel can produce a different result from the desktop browser.

Adjust Chat through Chat’s own controls

In desktop Gmail, open Chat and Meet in the full settings and follow Manage chat settings. Review desktop notifications, notification sounds, and email reminders separately. Chat also supports conversation-specific notification choices and a Do not disturb availability status.

A muted conversation and a disabled browser permission are different causes. Google’s Chat settings can show an example notification, which helps test the active device without sending a real message to someone. Notifications may move between recently active devices, so a quiet phone while you use desktop Chat is not automatically a delivery failure.

Test one channel at a time

After a change, distinguish an ordinary email alert from a Chat desktop alert and an unread-message email reminder. Turning off reminders does not necessarily silence live Chat notifications. Muting a space does not disable email notifications for your whole mailbox.

For duplicate alerts, inspect other signed-in browsers and devices before changing more permissions. Some organizational app notifications have special urgency behavior, so do not promise that every event will follow the same mute rule. Keep a short record of the event type, account, device, and observed notification; this is more useful than a blanket claim that Gmail notifications are broken.
