Hiding Chat or Meet in Gmail changes the integrated workspace you see. It does not, by itself, turn off your organization’s communication service, cancel meetings, or stop someone using a separate Chat application. Use the display controls when your goal is a quieter Gmail layout.
Hide the integration you do not need
On a computer, open Gmail in the intended account. For Chat, choose Settings, See all settings, then Chat and Meet. Set Chat to Off and save the changes. Google’s current instructions for Meet use Settings, then Customize under Chat and Meet in Quick settings. Clear the Google Meet checkbox and choose Done.
These are two different controls. Changing one does not prove that the other was changed. On a phone, consult the Gmail help instructions for your platform rather than searching for every desktop tab inside the app.
Keep display preferences separate from access policy
A work or school administrator can separately enable or disable services for users. Do not ask an administrator to disable a whole service merely to remove your own navigation item. Equally, hiding a button is not an adequate response when an organization actually needs to restrict access.
For a child’s account, blocking a standalone Chat app and controlling Chat within Gmail can have different effects. Treat the family’s account restrictions as a separate task; a hidden Gmail icon is not proof that messaging is inaccessible.
Verify the result without changing your account
Return to the inbox and confirm that the intended navigation item is hidden while email still works. If you later want it back, reverse the relevant display preference. There is no need to delete the account, remove meeting invitations, or reinstall Gmail.
If an option is missing, record the account type, platform, and whether you are opening your own mailbox or a delegated mailbox. Ask support about that precise configuration. A changed Gmail layout should not be mistaken for a service outage or a loss of existing messages.
