A task created from Gmail belongs to the account used when it was created. If its email link opens another mailbox or cannot find the message, check account context before recreating the task or editing the link.
Compare the task account with the mailbox account
Inspect the Google Account shown in Tasks or the Gmail side panel. Then inspect the address in the Gmail tab opened by the task’s associated email link. Similar profile pictures are not enough to establish that they match.
Check the task list too. A personal task copied manually into a work list does not automatically transfer access to the source email, and another person cannot open your private message merely because you share its URL.
Open the correct account deliberately
Use Google’s account switcher to open the intended Gmail account and locate the message there. Separate browser profiles can make work and personal account contexts clearer when your organization permits them.
Do not hand-edit account-number segments in a Gmail URL as a permanent repair. Those numbers reflect a browser session’s account order rather than a universal identity. Do not send the link or message contents to an unrelated account to make it open.
Check whether the message still exists and is accessible
If the correct account also cannot locate the email, search the mailbox and relevant folders before concluding that the task itself is broken. A deleted message or removed account permission can leave a follow-up item without a usable source.
Ordinary delegated Gmail has limits, including Add to Tasks, so do not expect every owner-account workflow to work through delegation. If a task was created in the wrong account, make a properly authorized replacement with only necessary details and verify its link before removing the old task. Avoid accumulating duplicates while testing. Record the source account, task account, browser profile, and observed destination for support.
