Restoring a suspended Workspace user’s Gmail access depends on why the account was suspended. Read the administrator-visible reason before using Reactivate or promising that every suspension is recoverable.
Distinguish the suspension types
An administrator can suspend a user deliberately. Google can also restrict an account because it appears at risk, needs identity verification, exceeds sending limits, or violates terms. Those conditions do not all have the same recovery route.
A Gmail sending restriction can leave other services and incoming mail available. An administrator-suspended account blocks the user’s services and new incoming email and calendar invitations, while existing data is not simply deleted.
Use the documented recovery option
With the appropriate user-management privilege, open Directory, Users, find the account, and inspect the suspension reason. For an eligible administrator-suspended user, use More options, Reactivate and confirm the intended account.
For an at-risk account, follow Google’s administrator security checklist before restoring access. Some verification conditions require the user to complete Google’s own sign-in steps. Accounts suspended for particular Terms of Service abuse cannot be restored by an administrator or Workspace support.
Verify identity and delivery after recovery
Confirm the person requesting access through your organization’s established process. Do not provide backup codes or change recovery details based solely on an unexpected email. Keep a record of who authorized the restoration.
After recovery, test normal sign-in and a small incoming and outgoing message. Do not assume messages rejected during suspension will automatically be resent by their senders. If the account was compromised, review sessions, authorized apps, forwarding, and the sending source through the supported security process. Restoring access is not the same as proving the underlying incident is resolved, and a suspended account’s retained data does not remove ongoing licensing or retention obligations.
