Gmail Changes Back to a Different Language: Check Account and Browser Preferences

2026年10月29日 by wisechecker

If Gmail returns to an unexpected language, check the account you are using and the layer that controls the display. Gmail’s web language, Google Account web preferences, browser translation, and mobile-app language are different settings.

Save the Gmail web language

On a computer, open the intended Gmail account. Go to Settings, See all settings, and the Language section. Select the display language and save changes at the bottom. Confirm the address before assuming the preference failed to persist.

If the interface changes only in a different profile or account, compare that account’s settings. A bookmarked link can return you to a different signed-in account than the one whose language you changed.

Review Google Account and browser behavior

Open your Google Account’s Language page and inspect the preferred web language. Google can also add languages based on use; the page provides controls to remove an automatically added language or stop automatic additions.

Check whether the browser is translating the interface. Translation changes what you see without necessarily changing Gmail’s saved language. Compare the original page with translation off for that page, rather than clearing all browser data immediately.

Separate display language from typing tools

Google’s web-language preference does not set the language of every mobile app. For the Gmail phone app, review the device’s supported app-language or system-language settings. The route varies by operating system and version.

A keyboard input tool affects the characters you type, not necessarily menus and buttons. Gmail’s browser-based input tools are another separate setting. If the problem persists, record the account, URL, device, browser translation state, and whether the unexpected language appears before or after sign-in. Google’s guidance mentions cookie cleanup for some language failures, but removing cookies also affects saved sessions; preserve work and isolate the cause before taking that broader step.
