Gmail on iPhone and iPad does not put every attachment into one universal Downloads folder. The destination depends on whether you saved a photo, saved to Drive, or chose a location through the system sharing controls.
Recall which save action you used
Open the original message and inspect the attachment without downloading another copy immediately. Gmail offers different actions for images, including downloading to the device and saving to Google Drive or Google Photos. Touching and holding an inline image can also offer Save to Photos.
For documents, opening a preview is not the same as saving a durable copy to Files. If you used Share and Save to Files, the folder selected at that point determines where to look.
Search the destination that matches the action
Check Photos for an image saved to the photo library. In Files, use Search or Browse and inspect On My iPhone or On My iPad, iCloud Drive, and any connected storage provider. Apple’s general guidance also suggests checking Downloads in iCloud Drive for downloaded files.
If you chose Save to Drive in Gmail, open Drive under the correct Google Account and search for the filename. A file saved there is not necessarily downloaded for offline use on the iPhone. Likewise, a Google Photos save should be checked in the relevant Photos account.
Save a new copy deliberately if needed
When the original destination cannot be established, save one fresh copy to a clearly named folder and verify that it opens there. Confirm that the selected location is permitted for work documents and that it has adequate space.
Do not delete the source message simply because a preview opened successfully. Keep it until the saved copy is verified. If Gmail warns that an attachment is suspicious, verify the sender through a known channel before opening or resaving it; finding a download location does not establish that a file is safe.
