Gmail on iPhone and iPad lets you choose different actions for left and right swipes in the message list. These are Gmail-app settings. Apple’s Mail swipe options do not configure the Gmail app, even when both apps display the same Gmail address.
Set the action for each direction
- Open Gmail, tap Menu at the top left, and open Settings.
- Under Inbox, select Inbox customizations, then Mail swipe actions.
- Choose Right swipe or Left swipe and select the action you want.
- Review the other direction separately so an unexpected gesture does not perform a destructive action.
Google lists Archive, Trash, Mark as read/unread, Snooze, Move to, and None as available choices. Names or placement may vary as the app changes. Choosing None is useful if you prefer to open a message and use explicit controls instead of acting through a swipe.
Understand the result before testing
Archive removes a message from the Inbox while retaining it in the mailbox. Trash is a deletion action: ordinary Gmail Trash has a limited recovery period, and permanent deletion is different from archiving. Neither action should be tested on the only copy of an important message.
Use a harmless message to test both directions. If the result is wrong, use Undo while it is offered or inspect the appropriate mailbox location. Do not assume an Undo control will remain available indefinitely. Read status, labels, and deletion changes can also appear in other clients connected to the same account after synchronization.
Check accessibility and keep changes narrow
Google says custom swipe actions also apply with VoiceOver. Focus on the message and use the available action gestures; its guidance notes that the VoiceOver rotor must be set to Actions.
If the setting seems ineffective, confirm that you are using Gmail’s message list rather than Apple Mail or a notification control. Update the app and repeat the harmless test. Clearing app data, deleting the account, or reinstalling Gmail is unnecessary just to choose a different swipe action.
