Removing a Gmail account from an Android device is different from deleting the Google Account. Google’s local removal process signs that identity out of the device’s Google apps. Confirm server copies and preserve unsynchronized work before using it.
Check what must remain accessible
Open Gmail on the web and verify important mail and drafts. Inspect the phone’s Drafts and Outbox for local-only content that has not synchronized.
Confirm that you can sign in again using the required password, verification method, and recovery arrangements. Do not remove the only functioning session as a casual troubleshooting experiment when access is uncertain.
Remove the specific device account
- Open Gmail on the Android phone or tablet.
- Tap the profile picture.
- Choose Manage accounts on this device.
- Select the intended account and use Remove account.
- Read and complete the device’s confirmation.
Manufacturer menus and managed-device restrictions can differ. Stop if the screen describes deleting the entire Google Account or a whole work profile rather than the intended local account removal.
Verify the scope afterward
The cloud Google Account is not deleted by this local removal. Mail can remain accessible through another authorized device or web sign-in. However, local access and unsynchronized data can change, and other Google apps on the device are affected too.
If your goal was only to view a different mailbox, switching accounts or leaving All inboxes may be sufficient without removal. If the device is lost or stolen, use the official remote session-security process instead of assuming a local removal you cannot perform has already happened.
For a managed work account, involve the administrator when policy controls the device or profile. Do not remove the work profile merely to hide its Gmail icon.
After any authorized re-addition, use the supported Google sign-in flow and verify a known message, synchronization, and sender identity. Local account removal is not a universal repair for server delivery, quota, or administrator-policy failures, so establish the reason for using it first.
