How to Remove a Send-As Address From Gmail Without Deleting Its Mail

2026年10月29日 by wisechecker

Removing an address from Gmail’s Send mail as list stops that sending configuration; it does not normally delete the messages already stored in the mailbox. Keep this action separate from deleting a Google account, removing an administrator-managed alias, or stopping incoming forwarding.

Document what currently uses the address

Before removal, note whether it is the default From address or Reply-to destination. Check drafts, templates, automatic responses, and approved applications that may depend on it.

Confirm the new intended sender identity first. Otherwise, users may unexpectedly send from the primary Gmail address after the old choice disappears.

Remove the sending entry

  1. Open Gmail on a computer.
  2. Go to Settings, then See all settings.
  3. Open Accounts and import or Accounts.
  4. In Send mail as, use Delete beside the specific address and confirm.

Read the exact setting and address before acting. The word Delete here concerns the sending entry, not a command to delete all mail with that address in its headers.

Verify receiving, replies, and retained mail separately

Search for a known older message to confirm it remains available. Check a new harmless composition and reply to ensure the intended From address is now selected.

If the address is also a Workspace alias, removing the Gmail sending entry does not necessarily remove the alias’s incoming route. Ask the administrator about that assignment. Likewise, forwarding settings are managed separately and may continue after Send as removal.

Previously delivered messages are not recalled, and recipients may still reply to the old address. Keep an approved receiving or transition plan if that address remains in earlier correspondence.

Google’s announced third-party Send as retirement is another reason to review obsolete entries, but do not remove a working configuration without identifying its replacement. Avoid deleting an entire account or its archive merely to tidy the sender menu. The narrow goal is ending one sending option while preserving the mail and access arrangements you still need.
