If Request read receipt is missing in Gmail, first check account eligibility. Google’s native feature is for eligible work or school accounts and does not work with personal @gmail.com accounts. An organization can also control availability and the allowed recipients.
Check the account and documented interface
- Open Gmail on a computer in the intended work or school account.
- Create a new message.
- Open More options at the lower right of the compose window.
- Look for Request read receipt if the organization makes it available.
Adding a work address to the Gmail mobile app does not necessarily provide the same Gmail web feature. A custom-looking email address alone is not proof that the account uses eligible Google Workspace services.
Ask the administrator about policy
If the feature should be available, ask whether read receipts are enabled for your account and whether they are restricted to internal or specified external recipients. Provide your account type and the interface where the option is missing.
Do not change account country, remove 2-Step Verification, or buy an unrelated personal storage plan to reveal the menu. An unavailable organizational feature is not repaired by weakening sign-in security.
Use the result appropriately
When requesting a receipt, complete the request before sending. The recipient may need to approve it, and some mail clients or group destinations do not return receipts as you expect.
Even a returned receipt does not prove that the recipient understood the content. Google warns that client behavior can generate a receipt without the person actually reading the message.
If a direct acknowledgment is important, ask for one and track the obligation through your approved process. Do not install a tracking extension merely because the native menu is absent, particularly if it requests broad access to the mailbox.
This article concerns the missing request control. A request that was available but produced no receipt is a different case involving recipient approval, destination type, policy, and client limitations. Keep those two symptoms separate when asking support for help.
