A reusable Gmail search helps you revisit the same set of criteria. A filter uses criteria to act on new incoming mail. Decide which you need before saving anything: a bookmark is a view, while a filter can change labels, inbox placement, read state, or other mailbox behavior.
Save a search for repeat viewing
Build the query in Gmail and inspect its results. For example, label:Action is:unread can serve as a review queue when you already use an Action label.
You can bookmark the resulting Gmail page in your browser as a convenience. Treat that as a browser navigation shortcut rather than a special guaranteed saved-search feature. Verify the correct account and query after reopening it; account selection and interface changes can affect the destination.
Create a filter only for an appropriate condition
- Open Show search options and enter stable incoming-message criteria.
- Run Search and inspect matching and nonmatching examples.
- Choose Create filter.
- Start with a harmless action, such as applying a test label, and review any option to affect existing mail.
Relative ages and changing read states can be useful for a view, but should not be treated as a scheduler that periodically reprocesses every old message. Gmail filters manage incoming mail; creating a filter is not a general background task system.
Keep automation reversible
Avoid Delete it, automatic forwarding, and broad spam exceptions while testing. Those actions have consequences beyond opening a saved view. Record the query and intended action so later troubleshooting is possible.
A bookmark can expose addresses or sensitive search phrases in its name or URL. Keep it in an appropriate browser profile and avoid sharing a screenshot that reveals private criteria.
After creating a filter, use a harmless new message that actually meets the conditions to verify it. Replies are filtered only when they match the criteria themselves. If all you want is a recurring manual review, retain the search shortcut and leave mailbox automation unchanged.
