Gmail can search for a particular star symbol or for the separate Important status. Use the documented operator for the marker you actually applied. A star’s color and Gmail’s yellow importance indicator are different attributes, even if you use both to prioritize work.
Find all starred or important mail
Use is:starred for starred messages and is:important for messages marked important. Add a sender, label, or date condition only after confirming the broad marker search works.
For example, label:Action is:starred can narrow a known action label to starred mail. The label must already exist, and starring a message does not automatically place it in that label.
Search for one enabled symbol
has:blue-starfinds the blue star.has:green-checkfinds the green check symbol.{has:red-star has:yellow-bang}searches either of those markers.
Google lists fixed names for its supported star options. Do not invent operators from your own meanings, such as waiting or urgent. Enable the desired symbols under Stars in General settings, then verify that a known message carries the intended icon.
Interpret conversation results correctly
A conversation can contain messages with different markers. Open it to find the matching individual message. Google explains that negative conditions can also return a thread if another message in it meets the condition; a visible starred reply does not by itself invalidate a search excluding starred messages.
If an expected item is absent, confirm its actual marker, remove other conditions, and check whether it is in Spam or Trash before broadening the scope. A mailbox label named Important is not necessarily the same as the system importance status.
Search only locates the markers; it does not complete a task, notify the sender, or establish authenticity. If you use symbols to track work, document the convention and verify it on your usual devices. Keep explicit deadlines in a reliable reminder system rather than relying on a color alone.
