Gmail supports fixed date searches and relative age searches. Choose a fixed range when you need a particular period, and a relative operator when you want a window that moves with time. Check boundary messages carefully if an exact cutoff matters.
Search a fixed period
A query such as after:2026/01/01 before:2026/02/01 narrows the search to a date window. Add a sender or subject only after verifying the broad period returns the expected mail.
You can also use Show search options or Gmail’s date chips. Those controls help avoid a mistyped month or day. Use an unambiguous year/month/day format in examples you save for later.
Use relative ages for rolling reviews
newer_than:7dfinds recent mail using a seven-day age condition.older_than:1yfinds mail older than a year.newer_than:2m from:alex@example.comcombines a relative age with a sender.
In these age operators, d means days, m means months, and y means years. A relative query bookmarked today will not represent the same fixed calendar dates next month.
Verify cutoffs and delivery evidence
Open results near the beginning and end of your intended range. Displayed dates, sender-provided Date headers, receipt times, and time-zone boundaries are not interchangeable. For a legal, billing, or operational cutoff, confirm the relevant timestamp from the original message and use your organization’s approved evidence process.
If one expected message is missing, temporarily widen the range by a day and remove other conditions. This helps reveal a boundary or timestamp issue without changing the mailbox. Include Spam and Trash only when the search scope requires them.
A date search identifies mail; it does not authorize deletion. Before creating an age-based cleanup filter or deleting a large result set, review representative messages and retention requirements. Avoid presenting a simple day-based Gmail query as a precise forensic export with a guaranteed time-zone interpretation.
