Missing Gmail category tabs often mean that the inbox is using a different layout. Tabs belong to the Default inbox, so switching to Unread first, Priority Inbox, or Multiple inboxes can replace them with sections. Check the selected layout before treating the change as lost mail.
Confirm the account and inbox type
- Open the intended Gmail account on a computer.
- Click Settings and inspect Inbox type.
- If you want category tabs, choose Default, then Customize.
- Select the available categories and save.
Make sure you are viewing Inbox rather than All Mail, a search, or a custom label. Those views do not have to reproduce the Default inbox’s tabs.
Check display differences and documented limits
A phone app can present categories through its navigation rather than in the same horizontal layout as a wide browser. Expand the app menu and review the correct account’s inbox settings instead of looking only for a row of desktop-style tabs.
Google also documents a limit for the Default inbox when an inbox contains more than 250,000 emails. If that applies, assess archiving carefully rather than mass-deleting mail just to restore tabs. Most missing-tab cases can be investigated without any destructive cleanup.
Verify that messages are still available
Search for a known sender or use category:updates and category:promotions. A category search can locate messages even when the current layout does not show that tab. Archived mail requires All Mail or a broader search.
If you cannot find an expected message, expand the investigation to Spam, Trash, and filters. Restoring a layout does not recover permanently deleted mail or establish that a sender delivered it.
You cannot create an arbitrary category tab or restore it by creating a same-named custom label. Keep a note of your preferred inbox type and selected categories so a later layout experiment is easy to reverse. Reinstalling Gmail or clearing all browser data is unnecessary for a simple inbox-type mismatch.
