An important message in Promotions has usually been categorized, not rejected. First confirm that it is legitimate, then move it to Primary or create a narrow category rule. Gmail’s Important marker and its category tabs are separate systems, so marking mail important is not the same operation as changing its tab.
Correct one message first
- Open Promotions and inspect the sender and message.
- On a computer, drag the message to Primary.
- Read the confirmation and any follow-up choice Gmail offers for similar future messages.
- Check the next expected delivery rather than assuming all historical mail has moved.
Use this correction for trusted mail you actually want in Primary. Moving a phishing message there does not make it safe or repair its sender authentication.
Check explicit rules before adding another
Open Settings, See all settings, then Filters and blocked addresses. Look for an existing rule that assigns the sender or subject to Promotions. Edit that specific rule if it explains the behavior; stacking a second broad rule can make later diagnosis harder.
If a rule is needed, search for the exact intended sender and inspect both matching and nonmatching examples. Create a filter with Categorize as Primary where available. Avoid a domain-wide match for a provider that sends both essential account notices and unrelated marketing.
Verify delivery and attention separately
Use a custom label or star for work that needs follow-up. A message can be in Primary and still be read, archived, or overlooked. Conversely, an important statement can remain in Updates without any delivery failure.
After the next delivery, check its actual category, inbox location, and relevant notification settings. If it never reaches the account, category sorting is not the complete diagnosis. Do not disable spam protection or create a Never send it to Spam exception merely to move a legitimate newsletter between tabs; those changes have a different scope and can weaken your review of unwanted mail.
