Conversation view groups related Gmail messages into a thread. Turning it off displays messages separately; it does not delete replies, change their recipients, or create another copy of your mailbox. Choose the view that makes individual-message actions easiest for you to check.
Change conversation view on the web
- Open Gmail in a computer browser and confirm the account.
- Open Settings, then See all settings.
- In General, find Conversation view and choose On or Off.
- Save changes and allow Gmail to reload the message list.
Reopen a known exchange containing several replies. With grouping enabled, expand the thread to see the separate messages. With grouping disabled, inspect the subject and timestamps to recognize replies that now occupy separate rows.
Understand what the setting changes
Google documents that a conversation can split when its subject changes or it exceeds 100 messages. Conversation view therefore does not guarantee that an entire long-running exchange will appear in one row.
List counts can look different after changing the view because a row may represent a conversation rather than one message. A change in the number of rows is not evidence that messages vanished. Search for a known sender and subject to compare the actual mail.
Check the scope of actions afterward
With a conversation open, the main toolbar can act on the conversation. To delete only one message, use that message’s own More menu and Delete this message. Check the selection before performing a bulk action in either view.
Gmail’s mobile settings have platform-specific paths; do not assume a web menu has the same location in the app. Conversation view also interacts with features such as follow-up nudges: Google notes that switching conversation view off hides nudges. If your purpose is only to hide a reminder, check its dedicated control before changing the way every conversation is displayed.
