If an image appears smaller after being sent through Gmail, first distinguish its on-screen display size from the actual image file. A picture fitted into a message or preview can look small while the downloadable file still has its original pixel dimensions.
Compare the actual source and received files
Keep the original image unchanged. For a non-sensitive test, note its dimensions, format, and file size, then download the received file and compare the same properties. Looking only at a screenshot of the message is not a reliable quality comparison.
If the recipient saved a preview or thumbnail rather than the attachment, ask them to use the actual attachment’s download control. A saved screen image is not necessarily the file that was transmitted.
Identify the sending route
Check whether you selected a file attachment, inserted a photo into the body, or shared from another application’s photo workflow. The Gmail app, operating system, and source application can offer different choices; do not assume they all use the same export behavior.
Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions distinguish a single photo inserted into the message from photos sent as attachments, and provide controls to change between inline and attachment presentation. That distinction describes placement, not a universal promise about every third-party app’s compression settings.
Choose a method appropriate for the required quality
If the original file is required, attach the verified file itself or use an approved sharing method and confirm the recipient can download the intended original. Check the applicable size limit and any Drive-link conversion.
If a smaller copy is appropriate, create it deliberately and label it clearly. Retain the original and verify that text, diagrams, or details remain usable. Consider whether the original includes private metadata before distributing it more widely.
Do not change Gmail’s account settings or disable protections on the assumption that there is a single global “send every photo at original quality” repair. A controlled file comparison identifies whether the problem is only display, a selected source copy, a source application’s export, or the file actually received.
