Download a Gmail attachment only when you need a local copy and have a reason to trust it. Previewing a message, saving an attachment to the device, and adding it to Drive are different actions with different storage consequences.
Select the specific attachment
In computer Gmail, open the message and move over the intended attachment. Choose its Download control. Compare the filename and type first, especially when several attachments look alike.
If you only need one document, use that document’s control rather than downloading every file in the message. An inline photo may require the browser’s save-image action instead; Google distinguishes pictures inside the message from ordinary attachment tiles.
Know where the copy is going
Google says the browser stores downloaded attachments in its configured download folder. In Chrome, review the downloads list and its location setting rather than repeatedly downloading the same item because you cannot see it on the desktop.
Android and iPhone or iPad use their own file and app interfaces. Follow the Gmail app’s available download or sharing controls and check the selected destination. A file saved into another app’s storage is not necessarily a copy in the folder you expected.
Keep privacy and safety checks separate
Do not open an unexpected executable or enable macros merely because Gmail allowed a download. Check the actual warning, sender, and purpose. Confidential-mode messages may intentionally prevent downloading; that is not a browser failure to bypass.
On a shared computer, avoid leaving private attachments in a general Downloads folder. Use your approved storage and retention process, and check whether another synchronized folder will copy the file elsewhere.
After opening and verifying the one copy you need, remove genuinely unwanted duplicates according to your retention rules. Removing a local download does not delete the original Gmail message or revoke another recipient’s copy. Conversely, deleting the email does not reliably remove files you already saved outside the mailbox. Keep those locations distinct when cleaning up.
