A Gmail warning that a message presents a potential security issue is different from a file-size error. Gmail blocks certain attachment types, malicious macros, some archive contents, and other potentially harmful material. Changing a filename does not establish that the contents are safe.
Match the warning to the blocked content
Read the displayed reason and inspect the file type without opening an unexpected executable. Google’s blocked-type list changes over time, so use its current list instead of relying on an old extension checklist.
A file inside a compressed archive can still be blocked. Google explicitly covers certain file types in compressed form or inside archives, and password-protected archives containing archived content. A ZIP wrapper is not a general exemption.
Choose an approved, safe alternative
If you intended to send a document, confirm that you selected the document rather than its installer, script, or an unrelated download. Where appropriate, export an ordinary, approved document format from the original application and inspect the resulting copy.
For a legitimate software or technical file, ask the organization’s security or IT team which distribution method is approved. Google’s help mentions Drive as an option for a file known to be safe, but a cloud link does not sanitize a file or override an organization’s policy.
Do not rename a blocked executable, conceal it in another archive, or tell a recipient to disable antivirus protection. Those changes hide the symptom without providing evidence that the file should be trusted.
Remember that links can also trigger a block
Google notes that a message can be blocked even when it has no attachments, because content, images, or links may present a security issue. Review the actual warning rather than assuming that the paperclip list identifies every possible cause.
If you believe a legitimate message is incorrectly blocked, preserve its non-sensitive error details and ask the administrator or support about the specific content. Avoid sharing the suspect file in a public forum for diagnosis. The goal is safe, authorized delivery, not defeating the control that raised the warning.
