Gmail Opens a New Draft Instead of Your Existing Reply: Check the Conversation

2026年10月28日 by wisechecker

If Gmail opens a new composer when you expected an existing reply, check whether you selected Compose, started another reply, or reopened the saved draft. Similar subjects and several open windows can make different drafts look like the same message.

Preserve the text before switching

If either composer contains important unsaved work, copy it to an appropriate private location first. Do not use Discard just to remove a window you have not identified. Record the account, recipients, and subject of each version.

A new Compose message is a separate draft. A reply started from a particular message has that message’s reply context. Typing the same subject into a fresh message is not reliable proof that it is the original reply.

Locate the existing reply

  1. Check the signed-in account.
  2. Open Drafts and inspect the likely item.
  3. Open the original conversation and look for the unfinished reply.
  4. Compare the text, recipients, and subject before continuing.
  5. Use one intended version for further editing.

Conversation view affects how related messages are displayed. Changing a subject can also split a conversation. A draft opening in a different location does not by itself mean the text or reply relationship was lost.

Distinguish window controls from new-message commands

The existing composer’s size or pop-out controls change how that composer is presented. Compose and reply shortcuts can start a new action instead. Use the controls for the draft already open if you only want more writing space.

If several browser tabs or devices are editing related drafts, stop editing competing versions while you identify the one you want. Do not assume the most recently opened window necessarily holds the latest text.

Verify before sending or removing a duplicate

Check the actual recipients and quoted history, then send only the intended version. Inspect Sent before sending another apparent copy. If an unwanted draft remains, discard it only after confirming it contains no unique text you need. A successful send from one composer does not automatically prove every other draft with the same subject is safe to delete.
