When a supervised child reaches Google’s applicable account-management age, the account does not simply become an unrestricted adult account overnight. Google offers an account-update process, and continued supervision and service-specific age requirements still need review.
Check the age that applies
Google’s minimum age is not thirteen in every country. Use the official country list and the child’s accurate birthday. A product can also have a higher age requirement than the general Google Account threshold.
Do not edit a birthday merely to make an account eligible sooner. For a school identity, ask the administrator how the organization’s account and service rules apply; personal Family Link instructions are not a substitute for school administration.
Review the account-update notice
Google says it emails both the supervising parent and child when the applicable age is reached. The child can maintain the current supervision arrangement by taking no action, or follow the account-update notice to review the offered settings.
The official guide describes opening the email titled Ready to update your Google Account?, selecting the update option, reviewing settings, and agreeing. Verify the notice through the expected account and official pages rather than entering credentials through a suspicious link.
Keep updating and stopping supervision separate
Updating the account while retaining supervision is different from ending supervision. Google’s current dedicated account-age and supervision guides say children under eighteen need parent approval to stop supervision. Reaching the country-specific account age should not be described as an automatic right to bypass every parental control.
If the family chooses an eligible supervision change, follow the official controls and review the notifications and device effects. Do not remove the account or reset a device to imitate the change.
Confirm the resulting settings
Check the child’s sign-in, supervision status, activity preferences, and access to the services they need. Some child-specific features can change with age, but that does not guarantee that every adult feature becomes available. Review payments, content access, and individual app requirements separately. If a setting is still unavailable, use its specific eligibility guidance rather than repeatedly changing the birthday or creating a second identity.
