Google Inactive Account Policy: Check What Counts as Activity

2026年10月28日 by wisechecker

Google’s inactive-account policy applies to personal Google Accounts that have not been used for at least two years. It permits deletion; it does not mean every quiet mailbox disappears on an identical two-year deadline. Organization-managed accounts have different administration rules.

Check activity for each account

Google describes signed-in activity such as reading or sending mail, using Drive or Search, watching YouTube, or using Sign in with Google on another service. Activity is associated with the account, not simply with a phone that happens to contain several accounts.

If you keep a second account for backups, open that specific identity and use it deliberately. Using your main account on the same device does not establish activity for every other account. Avoid relying on an unread mailbox, a saved password, or a device name in an account list as your only evidence.

Review exceptions and product-specific rules

The policy lists exceptions involving certain purchases, ongoing subscriptions or transactions, balances, and management of an active minor account. Check the current official list for your circumstances rather than assuming that a free account is always at risk or a historic purchase protects every product’s data forever.

Google also describes product-specific inactivity policies. Keeping the Google Account active is not a universal guarantee that an unused product retains all data indefinitely. Save important records through the relevant product’s supported export or backup tools.

Keep notices and plans usable

Google says it sends notices to the account and its recovery email before deletion under the policy. Keep that recovery address current and check notices from your account’s official settings. Do not enter your password through an unsolicited “prevent deletion” link without verifying its destination.

Inactive Account Manager is a separate planning tool for sharing selected data or notifying contacts after a chosen period. It is not a way to promise permanent retention without activity. Review its settings and trusted contacts if you want a plan for prolonged absence. For an employer or school account, ask the administrator about their retention and departure policies instead of applying the personal two-year rule.
